NATIONAL CONFERENCE ON ICT AND
LITERACY SKILLS FOR THE DEAF
20th and 21st
July 2001
Chennai, India
Deafchild India
was a Deafax project, led by the Nambikkai Foundation and
sponsored by the Big Lottery (International Division).
One of the tasks
that the team undertook since the start of the project was
an assessment of the status of education for the deaf within
Tamil Nadu (Tamil Nadu is one of 25 states in India, and
has roughly the same population as the UK). The results
of this extensive survey of schools, teachers, head teachers,
pupils, deaf adults and parents were launched at the National
Conference on ICT and Literacy Skills for the Deaf to be held
in Chennai, India on 20th and 21st July
2001.
It is hoped that the findings of this research will prompt
the Indian Government into reviewing its education curriculum
for deaf children, largely from the point of view of using
Information and Communications Technology as an educational
tool.
300 people attended the conference and took part in hands-on
workshops. They were addressed by members from Deafchild India
and Deafchild International as well as by Indian Government
Ministers and the Directors of Education who talked about
their current support in the field of deaf education.
