In July 2000 the Deafchild International team attended the
19th International Congress on Education of the Deaf in Sydney,
Australia where they presented a paper entitled "The Deafchild
International Website and Information and Communications Technology
as an educational and learning tool to develop deaf children's
literacy and communication skills".
Abstract from this paper: "The paper
gives an overview of the work carried out by the Deafax, under
projects entitled Deafchild UK and Deafchild International.
During the past 9 years over 7000 deaf children in the UK
have benefited from Deafchild UK telecommunication programmes
which are sponsored by the BBC Children in Need Appeal. Learning
technologies have emerged rapidly in recent years due to the
Internet and other technologies being more widely available
to all, including deaf children. To encourage all deaf children
to communicate using technology and to imporve their literacy,
Deafchild International was set up with sponsorship from Cable
& Wireless plc. This paper highlights the need for discussions
on the positive use of Learning Technologies between different
countries where deaf children share similar communication
and literacy challenges".
