| In 2002 Comic
Relief funded a programme to improve the communication skills,
literacy and employment prospects for deaf people in The Gambia.
Education for Development,
a charity within Reading University, as the lead organisation
involved Deafax (who are also based within Reading University)
as a partner in this project. Deafax has over 21 years of
knowledge and experience of both literacy and employment training
programmes.
Deafax staff have
visited the Gambia Association for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
(GADHOH) to set up the personal computer that has been obtained
with the funds and to provide training to GADHOH staff.
GADHOH staff visited
Deafax in 2002 for more extensive training, not only in Information
and Communications Technology (ICT) but also to gain knowledge
and skills in improving the employment prospects for deaf
people.
The training programme
is ongoing funds, permitting, using E-mail as the main contact
over the miles.
